The Deputy Mayor of Madrid and Delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, gave the start this morning and participated in the trophy presentation of the XIII Madrid Firefighters Race, an international sporting event in which athletes of the highest level participate alongside recreational runners, with 2,400 participants in the 2024 edition.
Before the start of the race, a minute of silence was held in tribute to the firefighters who died in the line of duty, especially the ten who perished in 1987 at the Arias Department Store, just 50 meters from the race starting point in Puerta del Sol. In the 10-kilometer race, participants in wheelchairs and handbikes started first, followed by firefighters with equipment, and finally, the recreational runners.
Furthermore, the firefighters set up a tent along the course to showcase their intervention suits and allow interested individuals to try on their equipment.
After the race, Sanz, accompanied by the Councilor of the Centro district, Carlos Segura, participated in the award ceremony of the 57 trophies in the sports and professional firefighters categories in various divisions (junior, senior, veterans, absolute, firefighters with equipment, and relays).
In addition to this event, the Madrid Fire Department is hosting open house events this weekend at the 13 fire stations in the city, from 10:30 am to 1:45 pm, as part of the celebration of their patron saint, San Juan de Dios. Those who have pre-registered – all spots for the stations are filled – will tour the facilities, see the vehicles, and learn about the daily work of firefighters.
