Centro Danza Matadero, space of the Area of Culture, Tourism and Sport, hosts from April 3 to 6 Matarife/Paraíso, an iconoclastic flamenco work by the company formed by Ana Morales and Andrés Marín, National Dance Awards winners. The work tells the story of the desires that drive human beings in their search for ideals, the illusions that feed those ideals, and the abysses they can push them into. Rooted in sacred and popular practices, religious and pagan, extracted from the cultural history of Andalusia, the flamenco dance and singing woven by the artists of Matarife/Paraíso lead the spectator to the heart of their obsessions, tracing the lines of a world where the contemporary is built on the vestiges of the ancient and history and tradition are rewritten.

The show, with live music and texts by Laurent Berger, Andrés Marín, and Antonio Campos, is a co-production of Centro Danza Matadero with Andrés Marín and Ana Morales, Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, Théâtre de Nîmes, and with the support of the Andalusian Agency of Cultural Institutions – Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Andalusian Government.

The Company

Andrés Marín is one of the most unique flamenco dancers of the present scene. His productions have focused on flamenco tradition and specifically on classic songs, but not from a conventional perspective, but through a personal style and a contemporary aesthetic. He received the National Dance Award (Creation category) in 2022.

Choreographic, artistic, and musical director of his own company, his creations reflect the expressive freedom of deep artistic research. From there arises a poetic rich in evocative images, in the service of his commitment to art and to himself. At present, he is presented as one of the great renovators of the genre. Recognized for his ability to navigate the line between tradition and avant-garde, he stands out for his international projection and creations such as Don Quixote, La vigilia perfecta, Éxtasis Ravel, or Yarin.

Ana Morales is one of the most prominent names in the flamenco scene, with versatility in various disciplines. A dancer with broad forms and innate sensuality, she conceives creation according to her vital moment, thus recreating on stage her own life steps. She received the National Dance Award (Interpretation category) in 2022. Ana Morales is recognized for her ability to create different universes in each of the interpretations she tackles, in a tireless, risky, and brave personal quest. Also noteworthy is the organic nature of her movement, a feature she highlights in works like Sin permiso, Cuerda floja, and Peculiar.

Included in JOBO, the Youth Cultural Bonus of the Madrid City Council, which offers free shows for young people aged 16 to 26.
