The Madrid City Council takes stock of its network of entrepreneurship support programs on the occasion of World Entrepreneurship Day celebrated on April 16. Specifically, since Almeida became mayor of Madrid, the City Council has supported more than 1,100 startups through various incubation and acceleration programs.
Through Madrid Emprende and Madrid Innovation, the City Council provides services to entrepreneurs in the city with advice, workspaces, training sessions, mentoring, and access to funding. As a result, companies that have gone through the Madrid Emprende network of nurseries have shown significant growth in their annual turnover, with a total turnover exceeding 116.7 million euros between 2019 and 2024. The most notable growth in 2024 was seen in the Villaverde Nursery, where the combined turnover of companies housed in its spaces at that time was more than double that of 2023.
The delegate councilor for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Ángel Niño, emphasized that «Madrid is currently one of the best European cities to start a business, as evidenced by the data on business creation in the region, which positions it as a leader in this context at the national level.» Additionally, the Community of Madrid is considered the region with the best conditions for entrepreneurship in Spain due to its infrastructure, services, and entrepreneurship promotion programs, according to the GEM Report.
More than 4,000 jobs have been created with the support of Madrid Emprende. Thanks to the support of Madrid Emprende, a municipal initiative that promotes and supports entrepreneurs and the growth of small and medium-sized companies in Madrid, companies that have participated in its programs or have been housed in one of its seven centers have generated around 4,300 jobs, contributing to the economic improvement of the region.
Currently, these spaces are at 100% occupancy levels in both the 119 offices and the 80 coworking spaces available.
The Madrid City Council also contributes to and promotes entrepreneurship with different annual award calls that seek to recognize original, creative, and innovative projects. Among them, the Madrid Impacta Award stands out, which promotes the consolidation of social entrepreneurship, and the Emprendedoras Award, which aims to enhance female talent with a total endowment of 100,000 euros for various projects led by women. The deadline for submissions is open until May 14. /
