The swearing-in ceremony of the flag, organized in Móstoles for the first time, welcomed thousands of citizens who gathered at the Plaza del Sol in Móstoles to witness this solemn event, organized by the City Council of Móstoles, along with the Infantry Regiment «Inmemorial del Rey» No. 1 of the Army, through the Ministry of Defense.

This event, held on April 5th, involved 400 jurors, 200 invited individuals from associations, clubs, and groups in the municipality, and had about 2,300 people in attendance. The Mayor of Móstoles, Manuel Bautista, along with other members of the municipal corporation, participated in the Flag Swearing ceremony, which was also attended by deputies from the Madrid Assembly and political representatives from neighboring municipalities.

Any civilian who voluntarily decides to swear allegiance to the flag commits to loyalty to Spain and offers support to the security and defense of the country. Any civilian who meets the requirements of being a Spanish national, over 18 years old, and not having participated in a Flag Swearing ceremony in the last 25 years can take part in the event by registering through the Ministry of Defense.

The Flag Swearing ceremony has its origins in Ancient Rome, where a citizen became a legionnaire through the ‘sacramentum’. In Spain, during the Reconquista period in the Middle Ages, similar ceremonies were documented. Since the 19th century, the military paradigm shifted to civilians, as the Army became the defender of the interests of the sovereign people. Therefore, these ceremonies were held with great solemnity in the most important streets and squares of cities.

The act of swearing the flag entails a commitment. However, the use of the verbs «swear» or «promise» could generate controversy, as «swear» has religious connotations, while «promise» is more secular. To avoid these nuances, a unified formula was established in 2007, asking: «Spaniards, do you swear or promise by your conscience and honor to uphold the Constitution as the fundamental law of the State, with loyalty to the King, and if necessary, to give your life in defense of Spain?» The response «Yes, we do» has a neutral connotation valid for both cases.
