The Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility Area, led by Borja Carabante, has completed the installation and commissioning of new traffic lights at various points in El Cañaveral (Vicálvaro) and Valdebebas (Hortaleza). Installed at a total of 13 pedestrian crossings in both neighborhoods, the traffic lights are operational from this Friday in El Cañaveral and will be in Valdebebas starting next week. This action responds to the demands of the residents and ensures the safety of pedestrians at these pedestrian crossings. The investment amounted to 1.25 million euros in El Cañaveral and 326,000 euros in Valdebebas.
The intervention in El Cañaveral has affected nine intersections requested by the residents. Four of them are located on Blas de Lezo Avenue. Specifically, at the junction of this road with Cañada de Vicálvaro to San Fernando, Mayorazgo Duarte, de la Igualdad, del Diálogo, and de la Ilusión streets. The other five traffic-light-controlled crossings that are operational from today are located on Miguel Delibes Avenue with Alto del Esparragal, José Escobar and Saliente streets, Mario Moreno Cantinflas, Concejal Victorino Granizo, and Enrique Urquizo. Additionally, two cameras have been installed to monitor mobility on these roads and their access to the M-45.
In Valdebebas, the new signage and installation of traffic lights have been carried out at four intersections on Juan Antonio Samaranch Street with José Antonio Corrales, Fernando Higueras, María Reiche, and Estanislao Pérez Pita streets, and they will be activated next week.
To enable the operation of these traffic lights in the neighborhoods of Valdebebas and El Cañaveral, it was necessary to install fiber optic connections. Specifically, to ensure the proper functioning of all intersections, 8,000 meters of fiber optic cable have been laid, and communication nodes have been built. Also, prior to the activation of the traffic lights, the crossings and vehicle stop lines have been painted.
Next traffic lights, in El Cañaveral
Following this action, the Madrid City Council plans to install new traffic lights at other points in El Cañaveral to meet the needs of the residents and synchronize their operation with the growth of the neighborhood and the opening of new services and facilities. In this context, the Urban Planning, Environment, and Mobility Area has already identified the next points where traffic lights will be installed. These will be locations near future school areas and the nursery located on Victoria Kent Street.
Currently, the administrative procedures prior to the installation of traffic lights are being carried out, and it is expected that the works will be carried out in the second half of this year. Along with these actions, the City Council will address any requests that residents may have for the installation of traffic lights at other points in the neighborhood based on their priority from the perspective of road safety and the demand of vehicles and pedestrians.
