Construcción de un baipás para el cierre del paso inferior de la A-5

Starting next Monday, April 7, the City Council of Madrid will proceed to the total closure of the vehicle underpass that connects Calle de Seseña, under the highway, with the road to Boadilla del Monte. This new action, framed within the A-5 underground works and subsequent execution of the Southwest Green Corridor, is carried out to begin the demolition of the underground structure, expectedly in the second half of May.

The northbound exit of the A-5 (in the direction of Madrid) towards Boadilla del Monte will remain open. To improve access for the residents of the Campamento neighborhood, a left turn will be enabled from the mentioned ramp to Calle Carabias, a maneuver that could only be done from the underpass that is being eliminated.

With the recent opening on March 1 of a new roundabout on Avenida de los Poblados at the intersection with Calle del Pilar, alternative routes to join the A-5 can be taken via the Los Yébenes junction, Avenida del Padre Piquer, and Avenida de los Poblados.

Access to the Aluche neighborhood will also be facilitated through these three points, as well as via Calles Allende and Villadiego to continue on Calle Meliloto, avoiding the construction zone.

Traffic diversion for the demolition of the underpass

From the same Monday, April 7, a bypass will be constructed to divert traffic in preparation for the demolition of the underpass in the second half of May.

The traffic entering and exiting Madrid, which was redirected to the northbound lane of the A-5 on February 10, will continue on that road, likely until the end of the year, with a maximum speed limit of 50 km/hour in the construction zone.

Impact on EMT Madrid

The line 65 of the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT Madrid) that currently runs through the underpass will inevitably be affected. To maintain its service, especially in the Campamento neighborhood, its route towards Madrid will be modified, adding new stops along the road to Boadilla. Three new stops will also be added in the Aluche neighborhood, promoting public transportation.

With the construction of the Southwest Green Corridor and the undergrounding of the A-5, the City Council of Madrid will reclaim the space currently occupied by the highway that separates the neighborhoods of Lucero, Aluche, and Las Águilas, which have been separated from Campamento and Casa de Campo (the latter belonging to the Moncloa-Aravaca district). Once completed, the project will reduce surface traffic by 90%, where currently 80,000 vehicles circulate daily, as well as reducing pollutant emissions.

Above ground, the covering of the A-5 will extend the pedestrian boulevard from Avenida de Portugal to Avenida del Padre Piquer in a 3.2-kilometer project. Pedestrian and cycling mobility will be prioritized, with a roadway designed to cater to local vehicle and public transportation needs.

Underground, the new tunnel will have two spans and three lanes in each direction. The lanes closest to the center median on both sides will be designed for use as bus-VAO lanes, equipped with variable signage to regulate their use according to traffic needs at any given time. The flexibility of this system will optimize the infrastructure, adjusting to transportation demand as needed. /
