Madrid is a city free of the most polluting taxis. The sector has undergone a true revolution in fleet renewal since 2019 thanks to the efforts of license holders and the Cambia 360 grants promoted by the Madrid City Council. Vehicles with A environmental classification disappeared years ago, and those with B labels represent 0.22% of the total taxis, dropping from 4,486 B vehicles in 2018 to 34 in May of this year (all eurotaxis), a 99.2% reduction.
Madrid taxis are predominantly ECO-friendly. Out of the total 15,585 taxis, 13,745 have this environmental classification (88.2%) and 5% (786) are ZERO emissions. The municipal government aims to increase these figures and, once again this year, is launching a call for grants for the sector. The goal is to reduce polluting emissions and continue promoting taxi modernization. Over the past five years, the municipal government has allocated 13,829,000 euros to this sector.
On Monday, June 2nd, at 00:00, the Madrid City Council will open the new call for applications for Cambia 360 grants for taxi vehicle acquisition. An initial budget of 1,850,000 euros has been set aside, with the possibility of an additional million. Applications can be submitted until June 30th.
This new grant call follows the path of the 2024 one, offering greater incentives for eurotaxis (adapted for people with reduced mobility) to ensure sustainable service for this group and including grants for the purchase of second-hand eurotaxis. This measure is taken to encourage the renewal of these vehicles, in line with air quality improvement and climate change goals, as well as non-discrimination criteria to promote 5% of the fleet being adapted for people with reduced mobility.
Interested parties must be license holders and have purchased a vehicle from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, inclusive. Eurotaxis purchased from June 1, 2024, to June 30, 2024, and autotaxis that applied having bought a vehicle from September 27, 2023, to June 30, 2024, but did not benefit due to insufficient credit, will also be considered.
Amount of grants
The grants are divided into three lines. Firstly, grants for new eurotaxis, which can receive up to 20,000 euros per vehicle, not exceeding 50% of the invoice amount. Secondly, second-hand eurotaxis can receive up to 10,000 euros in grants without exceeding 50% of the invoice amount. Lastly, new ZERO emissions autotaxis can receive up to 5,000 euros per vehicle.
Almost 120 million euros in six years
In total, the Madrid City Council will allocate 9.8 million euros for the seven Cambia 360 calls, expandable to 23.3 million. Since 2019, over 117.3 million euros have been allocated to Cambia 360 Grants. 76% has been for private vehicle purchases (44.15%) and for thermal facility renovations (31.88%).
These grants have become a key tool to incentivize citizens to lead the shift towards sustainability in all areas, helping to comply, for the third consecutive year, with the European directive on air quality.
