The Mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet, visited CEIP Cardenal Cisneros this morning to participate in a heartwarming activity with the third-grade students: a collective interview where the students acted as journalists, enthusiastically asking dozens of questions they had prepared over the past few days in class.
The initiative originated from a letter sent by one of the students to the Mayor’s Office, expressing the desire to personally interview the mayor. Far from being just a simple anecdote, that letter was the starting point for an unforgettable educational experience in which the whole group got involved with enthusiasm and creativity. The school’s directors and teachers coordinated this visit with the aim of bringing local politics and the institutional figure of the Alcalá mayor closer to the youngest students.
During the meeting, Judith Piquet responded with closeness and naturalness to all the questions. She explained that the most beautiful part of being a mayor is being able to help the residents and improve the city, although she acknowledged that the most difficult part is making decisions that don’t always please everyone. She shared that she was born in Madrid in 1979—because there was no hospital in Alcalá at that time—that she was appointed mayor in June 2023, and that her day starts at six in the morning, waking up her children and taking them to school before starting her workday at the City Hall. «Every day is different, and every day I try to give my best for this city,» she said.
The questions also touched on personal aspects: her favorite fruit is watermelon, her favorite Disney movie is The Little Mermaid, and she loves dogs—fondly remembering her dog Lola. She confessed that she has no patience for painting miniatures, that she enjoys walking and going to the gym, and that she doesn’t like lentils. Her favorite food is potato omelet and her favorite dessert is chocolate ice cream. With laughter, she admitted that she listens to the YouTuber YoSoyPlex because her son likes it, and that her favorite place in Alcalá is the squares, especially Las Bernardas. She also revealed that she dreams of building a modern bus station and a new school for the city.
To conclude the event, the students surprised the mayor with a newspaper they had created themselves. Judith Piquet thanked them for the gesture and encouraged everyone present to continue learning, taking care of their city, and believing that, with effort, enthusiasm, and teamwork, any dream is possible. «Today I have received many questions, but I also take away many smiles. Thank you for making me feel so welcome,» she concluded.
