DISABILITY
- Awareness sessions, motivational talks, gymkhanas, walks, plantations, an activity with dogs, or an inclusive police intervention, among the extensive programming to commemorate this week, from May 12 to 17.
- The Solidarity Market will be held on Friday the 16th in the Plaza de la Comunidad de Madrid (10:00-14:00) where items made in the Occupational Centers workshops will be sold.
- In parallel, around 200 students from schools in Leganés will participate in painting murals, games to debunk myths, inclusive cooperative workshops, kahoot on mental health, psychomotor circuits…
- «The objective is to make this reality visible, raise awareness, and highlight the skills and abilities of all people. I especially invite our neighbors to attend the Solidarity Market on Friday the 16th, and to learn about the daily lives of people with disabilities,» highlighted Jesús Rodríguez, Councilor of Social Services.
The Leganés City Council, through the Department of Social Services and the Disability area in cooperation with other Delegations and various entities, has designed an extensive program with about thirty activities to commemorate and raise awareness about Disability Week, from May 12 to 17. The main event will be a Solidarity Market in the Plaza de la Comunidad de Madrid on Friday the 16th, where there will also be games and workshops in which about 200 students from schools in Leganés will participate.
This year’s program includes awareness sessions, motivational talks, gymkhanas, walks, plantations, an activity with dogs, or an inclusive police intervention. As part of the activities to make this reality visible, this Wednesday, the presentation of the book «Historias de Leganés,» written in the literary workshop of the AMÁS Foundation, was held at the Rigoberta Menchú Civic Center, featuring live music and visuals and a performance by the AMÁS Escena group.
«Highlighting the skills and abilities of everyone»
The Councilor of Social Services and Disability, Jesús Rodríguez, stated, «Once again, we celebrate Disability Week with the aim of making this reality visible, raising awareness, and highlighting the skills and abilities of all people. There is a wide range of activities, educational, recreational, and cultural, for which we have collaborated with many entities and other Councils, to whom I thank for their involvement.»
Solidarity Market in the Plaza de la Comunidad de Madrid
On Friday the 16th, the flagship event of this Disability Week will be held with a Solidarity Market in the Plaza de la Comunidad de Madrid, from 10:00 to 14:00. «I especially encourage you to participate in this Solidarity Market where items and products made in the Occupational Centers in creativity, ceramics, wood, gardening, etc., will be sold,» highlighted the Disability Councilor.
In addition to the Leganés City Council, the YUNA Association, the Juan Ramón Jiménez Occupational Center, ProTG-D, APARKAM, AVANTE-3, ADFYPSE (AMÁS Foundation), Esfera Foundation, ALEM, REHABICTUS, ASAV, and AES-PW Prader Willi will participate in this Market.
200 students will participate in games and workshops
At the same Plaza, at 10:30, the Institutional Act will take place, with the presence of the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Recuenco, and the Councilor of Social Services and Disability, Jesús Rodríguez. In parallel to the Market, from 11:00 to 13:30, about 200 students from schools in Leganés will participate in games and workshops such as painting murals, a game to debunk myths, traditional games, inclusive cooperative workshop, kahoot on mental health, button workshop, psychomotor circuit, and textile workshop.
Awareness Sessions at Parquesur
On Monday the 12th, the bulk of the activities begin, with the first of the Awareness Sessions that the Esfera Foundation will conduct throughout the week at the Westfield Parquesur Shopping Center. On the same Monday, there will also be aquaerobics at the La Fortuna pool, workshops on «How to make a bonsai?» at the COFOIL (Occupational Center for Training, Opportunities, and Job Placement) in Leganés, «Mobility with blindfold and cane» at Plaza de España, «Crafts with a different perspective» at the National Police Plaza, and «Intimate talks» at the Avante 3 headquarters.
Inclusive police intervention
On Tuesday the 13th, an inclusive police intervention will be carried out, with specific training for Local and National Police at the Local Police Station; motivational TED Talks at the José Saramago Civic Center; a flower planting also at Saramago; and the Walk for Inclusion Metro Minute starting from the Ramiro de Maeztu Association Hotel.
Intervention with dogs
On Wednesday the 14th, there will be an Open Day at the Juan Ramón Jiménez Occupational Center; an Occupational Encounter Market at the Los Pinos Occupational Center; and an intervention with dogs organized by the Multiple Sclerosis Association of Leganés and REHABICTUS at the Ramiro de Maeztu Association Hotel.
Experiences Gymkhana
While on Thursday the 15th, the VI World Congress Asorbaex on Disability will be held at the CTIF Auditorium (Avenida La Mancha, 2), a workshop on recycled hats with the AMÁS Foundation, and an experiences gymkhana in collaboration with volunteers from La Caixa and the Esfera Foundation in the esplanade next to the Lope de Vega Primary School.
The Councilor of Social Services and Disability concluded by reminding that this Disability Week «is an opportunity to make known the daily lives of people with disabilities and raise awareness in society with proposals of all kinds, involving from the elderly to the youngest with games and workshops.»
