The delegate of Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, visited the recently renovated San Pol de Mar square this morning. The project, covering an area of 4,000 m2 and involving an investment of 963,000 euros, stems from a neighborhood proposal from the participatory budgets of 2021. The aim of the intervention was to reorganize the traffic in the square to make it more accessible and increase the pedestrian area, avoiding the barrier effect that the roundabout represented, as the ornamental fountain and surrounding vegetation formed an inaccessible islet for the residents.
The renovation included the installation of new urban furniture such as benches, chairs, tables, hammocks, and a bench encircling the fountain. Additionally, the playground equipment was renewed, and new bio-healthy elements were installed, along with replacing the lighting with high-energy-efficient LED technology.
The reform also brought improvements from an environmental quality perspective. In this regard, permeable pavements were used, seven trees were planted in addition to the existing ones, and nearly 3,000 shrubs were planted. The chosen vegetation is native, and ground-covering plants were used instead of grass due to their lower maintenance and water requirements.
The works reorganized the access to the children’s theater located in the square by creating bus stop areas, thus avoiding risks for school children. Previously, these vehicles parked in double rows, forcing minors to walk among the parked cars on the road. The location of the EMT Madrid bus stop was also changed to bring it closer to the new pedestrian crossing. Additionally, safety was enhanced at the pedestrian crossing near the M-30.
33 squares remodeled since 2019 and eight in progress
San Pol de Mar is one of the 33 squares remodeled throughout the city since Almeida became mayor, with ten of them in the current term. Furthermore, the Works and Equipment Area is currently carrying out remodeling works in eight other squares. These include Valle del Oro (Carabanchel), Tirso de Molina and Matute (Centro), Dalí (Salamanca), Julián Marías, José Luis Hoys, Tizas, and Hidrógeno, the latter four as part of the pedestrian itinerary project between the heart of Usera and Madrid Río. The renovation works for the Rastrillo square (Centro) will begin this summer. /
