The delegate of Works and Equipment, Paloma García Romero, accompanied by the councilor of San Blas-Canillejas, Almudena Maíllo, visited this morning the two plots of the future City of Sports where Atlético de Madrid will build municipal sports facilities that, once completed, will be handed over to the City Council for management. The works, which have already completed the earthworks phase, a necessary preliminary step for the execution of the new facilities, will be completed by the summer of 2026. The two plots together cover an area of around 60,000 m2.
On the first plot, there will be a regulation athletics track with eight lanes and the capacity to host official championships. The central part of this track will house an 11-a-side football field with regulatory measurements that can be divided into two 7-a-side football fields. In addition, on this plot, an additional 11-a-side football field will be built, another 7-a-side football field, and a covered 110-meter athletics warm-up track. On the other hand, the second plot of municipal facilities will have four covered multi-sport courts for team sports such as handball, futsal, or volleyball, among others, as well as four uncovered paddle tennis courts.
A complete sports offering that will become a focal point of attraction
In the other three plots that will make up the City of Sports, Atlético de Madrid will build a high-performance center for training and activities of the various club categories, a mini-stadium, paddle tennis courts, and other sports activities, as well as complementary and associated uses allowed by the planning.
The new complex will also improve the public infrastructure of the neighborhood with the urbanization of the internal roads of the area and the creation of new accesses from the M-40, a historic demand from residents that will help decongest the area and facilitate the mobility of residents in the vicinity.
The City of Sports is a public-private collaboration initiative between the City Council and Atlético de Madrid that will complete the urban fabric of the San Blas-Canillejas district around the Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium, providing residents of the area and Madrileños in general with multiple facilities that will have sports and leisure as protagonists. The new space, covering more than 265,000 m2, will have a positive impact with a sustainable and innovative approach in an enclave that has been underutilized so far, which is strategic for the transformation of the northeast cornice of Madrid. The project will redefine the urban landscape of this area of the city and generate a focal point of attraction with sports as the foundation. /
