The Madrid City Council adds a new small square named Jesús el Pobre to the street map, located on Calle del Nuncio, between Costanilla de San Pedro and Calle del Pretil de Santiesteban, in the Centro district. The mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, accompanied by the district councilor, Carlos Segura; the cardinal archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo, and the head of the Brotherhood of Jesús el Pobre, Carlos Amores, inaugurated this new space in the city today, where the Church of San Pedro el Viejo is located, housing the image that gives its name to the new small square.
Almeida emphasized the importance of «recognizing our past,» providing «shelter and welcome to religious expressions that connect with spiritual roots and shape us as a society.» The mayor congratulated the brotherhoods of Madrid for their constant activity throughout the year, not only for their spiritual work but also for their social function.
The naming of this small square follows the proposal approved by the Plenary of the Centro District Municipal Board on June 13, 2024, and subsequently by the Governing Board on June 27, 2024. With this new name on the Madrid street map, the City Council aims to commemorate the image located in the parish of San Pedro el Viejo, which has housed the sculpture known as ‘Jesús el Pobre’ since 1756, of unknown authorship and dates but highly revered by the people of Madrid and also visited by outsiders.
The parish of San Pedro el Viejo, on Calle del Nuncio, is one of the oldest in the city, mentioned in the Fuero of 1202, although it is believed that the current temple was built on the land, granted on the same street by King Alfonso X El Sabio, so that the existing fountain water could be distributed to the neighbors from there. Its antiquity, combined with its slender tower of Castilian Mudejar style and its 30 meters in height, make it a very attractive monument for tourism and one of the most visited in the city. /
