The mayor visited this morning the works being carried out on this road that connects Juan de Austria and the Historic Center within the Alcalá Improves its Neighborhoods Plan.
Alcalá de Henares, July 10, 2025.- Mayor Judith Piquet visited this morning the comprehensive renovation works being carried out on Guadalajara Avenue, with an investment of 1.7 million euros within the Alcalá Improves its Neighborhoods Plan.
The project, with an execution period of 18 months, includes the widening of sidewalks, the creation of new green and leisure areas, the improvement of trees and pavement, as well as the reorganization of traffic to create more pedestrian space, making this avenue more accessible, safe, and environmentally friendly, facilitating coexistence among neighbors, pedestrians, hospitality, and local commerce. The project will turn the section of the Military Pharmacy into a pedestrian zone, and the direction will only be towards Madrid.
Accompanied by deputy mayors Cristina Alcañiz and Gustavo Severien, and councilor Vicente Pérez, Piquet emphasized that «this is a key connection axis between the Juan de Austria neighborhood and the Historic Center that thousands of Alcalá residents use daily.» «This project will transform this thoroughfare into a meeting and enjoyment space for Alcalá residents, with wide and accessible sidewalks for walking, leisure areas with shade and trees that invite neighbors to enjoy the surroundings,» she added.
The fountain will once again preside over the Plaza de los Cuatros Caños, which will have new trees
Additionally, the project will visually connect Libreros Street with Guadalajara Avenue, and Piquet announced that the Four Caños fountain will regain its lost prominence in recent years and will once again preside over the Plaza de los Mártires, taking advantage of the comprehensive renovation of Guadalajara Avenue, with new trees and more green areas.
The mayor explained, «just as we have done in other areas of the city like Plaza de la Paloma or Plaza de San Lucas, the goal is to create more pleasant and less harsh leisure areas with shade in the summer.»
A phased project
The first phase of the works will cover from Cuatro Caños to Encomienda Street. With the aim of improving mobility in the area of Azucena, Teniente Ruiz streets, and the Cuatro Caños roundabout, the direction of Cruz de Guadalajara Street has been modified in the section between Azucena and Teniente Ruiz.
The second phase includes the north sidewalk of Guadalajara Avenue and Antonio Machado Street, and the intersection with Sebastián de la Plaza Street. Meanwhile, the third stage of the project will cover between Encomienda Street and Simón García de Pedro Street. Lastly, the final phase will be carried out at the end of Guadalajara Avenue and the intersection with Marqués de Alonso Martínez Street.
Traffic diversions and bus route modifications
Due to the works, temporary traffic diversions will be implemented, as well as changes in the location of bus stops. In addition, vehicles will not be able to turn at the Puerta de los Mártires roundabout towards Guadalajara Avenue, rendering that roundabout unused.
‘Alcalá improves its neighborhoods’ plan during the summer
This intervention on Guadalajara Avenue is part of the Alcalá Improves its Neighborhoods Plan, which will represent one of the largest urban transformations undertaken in the city in recent years. This summer, various actions that have been historical demands of residents will be carried out.
In addition to the ongoing works at Reyes Católicos with the construction of a 350-space parking lot around Nuestra Señora de Belén or the improvement works in the Santa Teresa shopping galleries area, the works to be carried out this summer in Tabla Pintora-Nueva Alcalá, Ronda Fiscal, and the Lope de Vega area will be added.
