Next Friday, February 28, is the deadline to apply for a reduction in the fee for the new garbage tax for those in vulnerable situations (recipients of the Minimum Vital Income and Minimum Insertion Income of the Community of Madrid), large families living in rental housing or with a large family certificate issued in another autonomous community, and all owners of vacant homes or inactive premises.

The Madrid City Council has included a reduction in the fee for large families in the new tax, similar to the one in the Property Tax (IBI), taking into account the cadastral value of the property and the category of the large family certificate. The reduction will be automatically applied in cases where the taxpayer is the property owner.

If the large family is a tenant in the property or has a large family certificate issued in another autonomous community, the reduction must be requested before March 1 of the year in which it is intended to take effect and will be maintained until the large family status is lost or the circumstances that led to its granting change.

In addition to the fee reduction for large families, a 100% reduction in the fee payment has been included for individuals in vulnerable situations and all recipients of the Minimum Vital Income and Minimum Insertion Income.

Likewise, vacant homes and premises where no activity is carried out will only pay the basic fee of the tax, so they must prove this circumstance for the reduction to be applied.

Streamlining the Process

The new garbage tax must be paid by the owners of around 1.7 million properties, with garages and storage rooms associated with a home, as well as vacant lots and buildings in a state of ruin, exempt from payment. Individual and certified notification of this new municipal tax will be made to each of the property owners in the second half of the year. Once the notification is received, the owner will have a generous deadline to make the payment.

To expedite and facilitate the process for citizens, the City Council has set up a specific section on the website www.madrid.es where you can learn about the Waste Generation Tax (TGR). General Information-Portal of the Taxpayer of the Madrid City Council and request fee reductions in the payment link Reductions and cases of non-submission-Portal of the Taxpayer of the Madrid City Council. They can also do so by calling 010 and visiting the five taxpayer service offices in the capital.

Since the approval of this new tax imposed on all municipalities in Spain by the central government, the Madrid City Council has maintained ongoing communication with large family associations to inform them of the reductions established for this group. Likewise, the Area of Social Policies, Family, and Equality has informed through the district social services of the 100% fee reduction for individuals receiving Minimum Vital Income or Minimum Insertion Income. /
