Centro Danza Matadero, space of the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports, premieres in Madrid Es aquí, a contemporary choreography that is part of the program with which Compañía Daniel Abreu celebrates its 20th anniversary. Between the 19th and the 22nd of March, this company, National Dance Award winner, will showcase four works that explore love, identity, and human connection. Each piece, to be performed in a single show, traces an emotional and philosophical journey about existence and relationships with the environment.

These four choreographies are part of a cycle dedicated to the trajectory of Compañía Daniel Abreu, which commemorates a national and international career with over 70 creations presented in more than 40 countries. Their repertoire reflects the restlessness and perseverance of the Canarian choreographer and dancer based in Madrid.

La desnudez can be seen on the 19th of March. This work of music and dance marked a significant milestone in the company’s career. It is a piece about intimacy, relationships, and connections that occur in less friendly contexts. An emotional and visual journey and a reflection on beauty, love, and vulnerability.

On Thursday, the 20th of March, El hijo will be performed, delving into the idea that as descendants, people carry a heavy load of patterns and behaviors, and the possibility of moving forward and opening new paths. It is a visually and sonically impactful piece that looks towards the future.

VAV explores the power of affections. Love from a philosophical perspective interpreted with rigor and mastery by five women in a fantastic and conceptual world. The scene is accompanied by texts and together they offer a choreographic impact. This piece was presented at the CINARS Fair in Canada and can be enjoyed at Centro Danza Matadero on Friday, the 21st of March.

National Dance Award and four MAX Awards

Compañía Daniel Abreu, created in 2004, has been awarded several prizes for choreography, direction, or interpretation, including the National Dance Award in the creation category (2014) and four MAX Awards. In these two decades of trajectory, over 40 dancers have interpreted Abreu’s creations such as Carmen Fumero, Anuska Alonso, or also National Dance Award winner, Dácil González.

Centro Danza Matadero, under the Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports of the City Council of Madrid, is a pioneering space in Spain, dedicated exclusively to dance in all its forms: flamenco, contemporary, classical, Spanish, and urban. Directed by the choreographer, dancer, and Princess of Asturias Award winner María Pagés and the playwright El Arbi El Harti, it is born with the vocation of integrating all audiences and vindicating each of the professions in dance: from the dancer to the choreographer, including the usher, the lighting designer, the stage manager, or the sound engineer.
