The Madrid City Council, through the Works and Equipment Area, will install the penultimate section of the new pedestrian walkway this weekend. This walkway is being built over the A-2 between Brussels Avenue and Corazón de María Street. This section and the remaining one are part of the access to the structure from Santa Hortensia Street. The new walkway will replace the existing one, which had structural and accessibility issues and will be dismantled in the coming weeks.
The new walkway will have more and better distributed access points, providing more alternatives for pedestrians and improving the connection between the Chamartín and Salamanca districts. In the northern area (Chamartín), there will be a ramp access on Corazón de María Street and another on Santa Hortensia Street, as well as a staircase at the meeting point of both ramps, leading to a small elevated square that will enhance connectivity among the three access points. In the southern area (Salamanca), there will be two accesses: an accessible ramp on Brussels Avenue and a staircase on America Avenue.
Traffic Impact
Traffic Diversions
The following traffic cuts are scheduled from 3:00 to 6:00 pm (approximately) on March 16, 2025 (see map for details):
- Closure of Exit 4C, leading to the closure of the A-2 lateral road (service road) in the entrance direction to Madrid.
- Closure of Exit 5A southbound on the M-30 (ramp towards America Avenue).
Motorized traffic on the M-30 can access America Avenue southbound by taking Exit 4 of the M-30 (Ramón y Cajal Avenue) or Exit 6A of the M-30 (Salvador de Madariaga Street and mortuary) (see map).
Public Transport Impact
The upcoming works will involve changes to the usual routes of bus lines 114, 115, and N4 of the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT Madrid) towards Cibeles from 3:00 to 6:00 pm on March 16. For more information, please visit the EMT Madrid incidents webpage.
The City Council recommends using public transport and avoiding private vehicle circulation in areas affected by traffic restrictions.
The project, which began in late January 2024 and entails an investment of 3.5 million euros, aims to keep the old walkway in service for as long as possible before the new one becomes operational. During the short transition period, an alternative route will be available under the Camilo José Cela Avenue bridge.
