The delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, presented this morning at the Museum of San Isidro the patterns that will allow Madrid residents and visitors to design and make their own traditional chulapo and chulapa costumes for the upcoming San Isidro Festival 2025, as happened in the last edition, accompanied by the president of the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME), Modesto Lomba.
This proposal aims to promote citizen participation in the festivities through design and sewing, as well as to contribute to the preservation of traditional craftsmanship and the promotion of Spanish fashion. It also aims to bring citizens closer to the world of fashion and sewing from a contemporary perspective that does not lose sight of the traditional roots of the city. The tradition of the popular Madrid costume converges with the values of current fashion: sustainability, local production, and the recovery of trades.
Rivera de la Cruz highlighted that «with this initiative, the whole family will be able to have their chulapo and chulapa costumes for these San Isidro festivities», emphasizing the reinforcement of the tradition «that has been accompanying Madrid residents on these special dates for the city» because «the ‘casticismo’ is a part of the modernity of Madrid.»
Thanks to this collaboration between the City Council of Madrid and ACME, the patterns, both for the dress and the two-piece suit (pants and vest), can be downloaded for free through a QR code from the official website www.sanisidromadrid.com or on cards distributed in cultural centers, district municipal boards, and tourist information points.
The designs have been developed by the pattern maker Encarna Herencias, from the Madrid workshop Con Alma de Costura. As a novelty, this year also includes children’s patterns to turn the little ones into authentic chulapos, available from size 4 to 12.
To facilitate the creation of this traditional Madrid attire, the website www.todoestaenmadrid.com will offer a route of shops dedicated to the sale of fabrics and another focused on sewing workshops.
In addition, the chulapas and chulapos will have the opportunity to showcase their dresses and suits in the chotis workshops that will be held this year at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, with prior registration on the San Isidro Festival 2025 website starting from April 28.
