The Government Board has authorized this Thursday the contract based on the supply and installation of lighting equipment with more efficient technology in eight municipal centers. As explained by the deputy mayor and municipal spokesperson, Inma Sanz, in the subsequent press conference, the specific actions of the contract consist of supplying and installing new high-energy efficiency lighting systems both outdoors and indoors, which will replace the current ones in the districts of Usera, Hortaleza, Carabanchel, Latina, Fuencarral-El Pardo, and San Blas-Canillejas.
The municipal facilities where the work will be carried out are: the Meseta de Orcasitas Cultural Center, the Huerta de la Salud and María Lejárraga libraries, the Federico García Lorca, Fernando de los Ríos, and Montecarmelo cultural centers, the Alberto Alcocer Primary School, and the athletics track at the Orcasitas Municipal Sports Center. The execution of the work represents an investment of 579,000 euros and will last for seven months. They will be financed from the general budget of the City Council of Madrid for the year 2025.
The contract is signed under lot 2 of the framework agreement, approved on June 3, 2024, by decree of the delegate of Urbanism, Environment, and Mobility, Borja Carabante, which covers previous studies and actions related to lighting in municipal buildings and facilities. This framework agreement sets the conditions that will govern the based contracts that are awarded for the supply and installation of photovoltaic equipment, lighting, air conditioning, electric vehicle charging points, and energy efficiency services in City Council dependencies and its autonomous bodies. This tool streamlines the contracting of interventions aimed at reducing energy consumption in municipal facilities and improving their environmental performance.
An improvement for the future of the city
This new contract aligns with the strategy of the City Council of Madrid to move towards a healthier and more sustainable city, reinforcing its commitment to improving air quality and fighting climate change. In line with the municipal objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by the year 2030, this action contributes to a more efficient energy management of public infrastructures.
Improving energy efficiency in public buildings represents a strategic commitment to a city prepared to face the challenges of climate change. Through these actions, electricity consumption is significantly reduced, leading to significant economic savings in the medium and long term, allowing these resources to be reinvested in other essential public services. Additionally, the modernization of lighting improves the quality of public spaces, providing greater visual comfort, safety, and well-being to users and workers of these centers.
In this way, the City Council continues to advance in improving the energy efficiency of its facilities, promoting economic savings, reducing emissions, and a more rational use of energy in the public spaces of the city, consolidating a network of municipal facilities adapted to the sustainability standards of the 21st century, which implies a further step in compliance with the Roadmap towards Climate Neutrality. /
