The music sought to break free from any programmatic references to become an absolute art form, detached from external influences, creating a conceptual world. However, music could not escape the centrifugal force that contemporary times imposed rapidly since the French Revolution. Musicians drew inspiration from four sources: literature, history, legend, and landscape. The Scottish Symphony is a result of the latter.
