The Circo Price Theater, a space within the Culture, Tourism, and Sports Area, becomes the epicenter of circus art during the month of April. In celebration of International Circus Day, which takes place on the third Saturday of April, this year on the 19th, the Price has prepared a diverse program designed to celebrate the richness, history, and constant renewal of this discipline.
Pagagnini, a ‘de-concert‘ by the Yllana company
From April 17 to 19, one of the most acclaimed shows by the Yllana company arrives at the Price. In collaboration with violinist Ara Malikian, Pagagnini is a ‘de-concert’ where four virtuoso musicians humorously reinterpret classical music, offering the audience an unrepeatable experience that combines musical genius and clowning.
With over three decades of experience, Yllana has established itself as one of the most innovative and renowned companies in the Spanish and international theatrical scene. Their distinctive style—based on visual humor, satire, and vibrant staging—has captivated audiences worldwide. With Pagagnini, Yllana achieves a perfect balance between musical virtuosity and physical comedy, breaking down barriers between genres and making classical music accessible, playful, and profoundly original for all audiences.
Circalizadas: a look at the circus from different disciplines
In its ambition to create bridges between the circus and other art forms, the Price also presents Circalizadas in April, bringing together three proposals that delve into the history and magic of this historic Madrid venue.
On April 20, at 11:00 am, Hop! will take place, the first theatrical tour of the Price, led by the Los Absurdos Teatro company. This unique activity invites the audience to discover the secrets of the center through an immersive and playful experience. Guided by historical and fictitious characters, the tour stops at iconic corners of the building, reviewing the imprint left by artists, writers, illusionists, and spectators over its more than 150-year history. An opportunity to relive the glorious past of the Price, learn about its most curious anecdotes, and feel the excitement of the circus from a theatrical and participatory perspective.
The second proposal comes in collaboration with Cineteca Madrid. From April 17 to 20, the Circo Price Theater presents a film and circus cycle showcasing movies that celebrate the circus as a universe of wonder and emotion. Cineteca Madrid will screen the films Shadows and Fog (Woody Allen, 1991), The Sun of the Future (Nanni Moretti, 2023), Clowns (Federico Fellini, 1970), Dumbo (Tim Burton, 2019), and The Circus (Charles Chaplin, 1928).
Accompanying these screenings, prior to the Saturday and Sunday sessions, discussions will be held with Jara Yañez and Fausto Ansaldi (before the film Clowns), and Santiago Aguilar and Javier Jiménez (before the film The Circus). Additionally, after Dumbo, audience members will have the opportunity to chat with two of the actors who appear in the film: Miguel Muñoz and Zenaida Alcalde.
Lastly, on April 21, at 7:30 pm at the Ateneo de Madrid, a theatrical interview will be conducted with Thomas Price (portrayed by Pepe Viyuela), and a reading of the book Biography of the Circus by Jaime de Armiñan will take place alongside actors, actresses, circus artists, and magicians.
CiRCA and a circus version of Swan Lake
To close the month, the Price hosts the show Duck Pond, a vibrant reinterpretation of Swan Lake directed at all audiences, by the prestigious Australian company CiRCA. With a contemporary aesthetic, spectacular acrobatics, and a lot of humor, Duck Pond explores themes such as identity, transformation, and the search for self.
Since its establishment in 2004, CiRCA has become one of the leading international contemporary circus companies. Based in Brisbane, Australia, they have taken their productions to over 45 countries, acclaimed by millions of spectators worldwide.
