The urban planning, medium and mobility delegate, Borja Carabante, visited on Friday in the section where the A-5 operates clandestinely to inform about pedestrian and rolling traffic that will take place in the coming days. From the access connecting Boadilla with Paseo de Extremadura, where municipal operators dismantled the A-5 section that began operating in April 2019, Carabante provided details of the works’ progress.
The branch manager, accompanied by the Latin district councilor, Alberto González, and the municipal technicians responsible for the work, indicated that six lower pedestrian stages will be progressively and definitively removed.
Starting on February 3, 2025, the passage will be cut between the streets of San León and Sanchorreja (PK 5+100 of A-5). The lower stage of the Yébenes link is offered as an alternative route.
Between February 9 and 10, the lower pedestrian crossing at Boadilla (PK 5+900) will be eliminated. The alternative offered is the green cycling ring footbridge or the lower scenario located at the father Piquer roundabout. The lower stage of Calle San Juan (PK 4+950 of A-5) will also be removed. The suggested alternative stage is the Yébenes link underpass or the Batán link underpass (Villamanín street). Additionally, the underpass of Villamanín street (in front of the El Greco sociocultural center) and Olivillo street (PK 4+100 of A-5) will be eliminated. The alternative passage will be arranged through the Dante street underpass.
Starting on February 20, 2025, the underpass of Villavaliente street (PK 4+300 of A-5) will be cut. The alternative will be the Batán connection underpass (Villamanín street).
From March 10, the underpass of Ilascas street (PK 6+100 of A-5) will be cut. The alternative will be the underpass located on father Piquer avenue and the green ring with a bike ring.
The delegate indicated that, due to the execution of works and actions to adapt public roads for public transport, parking will be timely affected on some streets.
Southern Calzada near rolling traffic: four lanes along the northbound road
Carabante reported that, between February 9 and 10, the closure of the southbound Calzada (towards Madrid) will divert all traffic to the northbound road (towards Madrid). In this way, the road for vehicles will continue with its capacity reduced by half (two lanes per direction), which will remain until the end of the year, while the Madrid Local Council carries out underground works on the southbound Calzada.
During the process, the maximum speed of the road in the work area has been reduced from 70 km/h to 50 km/h.
An urban transformation intervention
With the execution of the Southwest Green Promenade and the inherent Underground of A-5, the Madrid Local Council will reclaim the space currently occupied by the road separating the neighborhoods of Lucero, Aluche, and Las Águilas, which were separated from the countryside and the countryside (the latter belonging to the Moncloa-Aravaca district). 80,000 vehicles traveled daily on A-5. Once completed, the works will reduce surface vehicles and 90% of pollution emissions.
On the surface, the A-5 cover will allow the continuity of the pedestrian boulevard from Portugal Avenue to father Piquer Avenue in an action that includes a total of 3.2 kilometers. Pedestrian and cycling mobility will be a priority, leaving a pathway sized for local private vehicle and urban public transportation routes.
Underground, the new tunnel will have a three-lane distribution in two directions. The lanes closest to the median on both roads are designed to be used as Bus-Vao lanes, equipped with a variable signal that will regulate their use according to traffic needs at any given time. The flexibility of this system will allow infrastructure optimization, adapting to demand transportation variably. /
