Almeida in the act of delivering the 86th edition of the Journalism Awards from the Madrid Press Association,
The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, participated today in the ceremony for the 86th edition of the Journalism Awards from the Madrid Press Association, presided over by the kings of Spain and held at the Auditorio Caja de Música in CentroCentro. These awards have the institutional support of the City Council, through which «we pay tribute to those who, with courage, talent, and commitment, sustain the structure of democracy by seeking the truth,» because journalism is not just a profession, «it is an act of intellectual and moral exaltation,» emphasized the mayor.
Almeida argued that democracy cannot be understood without the work of one of its main actors: journalism. This profession «does not just narrate the facts, it subjects them to rigorous scrutiny, contextualizes them, and gives them meaning. Each journalistic piece is an exercise in mediating between the complexity of the world around us and the citizen’s consciousness, ultimately: a bridge that transforms information into knowledge,» he affirmed.
Coinciding with its 130th anniversary, the Madrid Press Association awarded veteran journalist Fernando Ónega the APM Honor Award, in recognition of a lifetime of professional work. Vicente Vallés (Antena 3) was honored for his professional performance with the APM Award for Best Journalist of the Year 2024. Irene Dorta (El Independiente) and Ana del Barrio (El Mundo) received the APM awards for Young Journalist of the Year, recognizing the work of a journalist under 30 years old, and Journalist Specialized in Madrid, respectively.
