Therefore, in order to protect the safety of bathers and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, the regional Forest Rangers supervise all natural areas of the region, considering that non-compliance could result in penalties for offenders. Despite this dissuasive practice, in 2024, 30 complaints were filed in the La Pedriza area, where transgression is more common, and this year, so far, there have been ten.
These professionals remind us that in places like the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, swimming is prohibited due to the fragility of aquatic ecosystems and the presence of protected species of flora and fauna. They also monitor river sections and reservoirs where this activity is not allowed to ensure the natural environment is respected.
In the Community of Madrid, there are four places where swimming is allowed until September 15. These are Playa del Alberche (Aldea del Fresno), Las Presillas (Rascafría), Los Villares (Estremera), and Pantano de San Juan (San Martín de Valdeiglesias), specifically in the El Muro and Virgen de la Nueva areas. Due to the high influx of visitors, the Madrid 112 Security and Emergency Agency (ASEM112) deploys a special security operation. The operation includes daily lifeguard teams from the Red Cross between 12:00 and 20:00, and the reinforcement of the Emergency Medical Service (SUMMA112) on weekends and holidays.
No using fire and paying special attention to children
To enjoy a safe swim in suitable areas, forest rangers remind us that these are natural areas with a high risk of fire, so fire should not be used under any circumstances. Additionally, the surroundings must be kept clean, and cars should be parked in designated areas, as the heat from the engine can burn vegetation, avoiding parking on roads or in front of barriers to not obstruct the passage of emergency vehicles.
It is recommended to be cautious when diving in shallow areas or jumping from a height; not to expose oneself to the sun for long periods and use sunscreen; as well as to drink water frequently to stay hydrated and not to abuse alcoholic beverages. In the case of children, they should always be supervised, and flotation devices must be approved and suitable for their size.
