Finalizada la restauración y recuperación de la Cruz del Siglo tras una inversión de más de 10.000 euros.

The Councilor of Historical Heritage, Vicente Pérez, visited this morning the restoration and recovery works of the Cruz del Siglo, after an investment of more than 10,000 euros and an intervention that lasted two months.

Pérez pointed out that «the Cruz del Siglo is an important heritage asset that is also emblematic of a popular neighborhood in our city. For this reason, we have worked on its quick recovery carried out by excellent restoration professionals.»

The Heritage Councilor recalled that «on January 10, the Cruz del Siglo fell, it was removed and transferred to the Municipal Archaeology Service, immediately starting the actions aimed at its restoration and recovery. The project was approved by the Local Government Board on March 21 and by the Local Heritage Committee on April 1.»

Inaugurated in 1901

The Cruz del Siglo was inaugurated on January 1, 1901, to commemorate the arrival of the new century. It was built in Monóvar sandstone, standing on a trunk-pyramidal pedestal and located on farmland at the top of Campo del Ángel. After being knocked down during the Civil War, it was restored in 1951, when it was relocated a few meters away to a municipal plot and provided with a cubic brick pedestal with stone ashlars at its corners.

In 1975, due to the poor state of conservation of the work and its proximity to the houses, it was temporarily dismantled until it was reinstalled in its current location in 1986 with a project by José María Málaga.
