Madrid has once again shown its appeal as an international tourist destination in April. According to hotel occupancy data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the city recorded a total of 871,846 travelers in April, which represents a variation of -0.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, while overnight stays grew by 7.2% to reach the figure of 1,919,985. The average stay accumulated was 2.03 nights per traveler, broken down into 1.68 nights for national travelers and 2.29 nights for international travelers.
The delegate councilor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, highlighted that «these results reflect the effectiveness of the strategy focused on a tourism model oriented towards quality and the diversification of long-haul markets.» Maíllo pointed out «the strong appeal of Madrid in Ibero-American markets such as Argentina and Brazil, which have grown in double digits in the first four months of the year.»
International tourism represented 61.1% of the total travelers and 68.3% of the overnight stays recorded in Madrid during April. Among the main international emitting markets, Argentina stands out, with a growth of 40.6% compared to the previous year, Switzerland (+38.6%), United Kingdom (+21.3%), and Brazil (+14.4%). Regarding overnight stays, the markets that have increased the most are Switzerland (+53.6%), Argentina (+45.2%), United Kingdom (+24.6%), and Germany (+19%).
Tourism, key to the economy and employment in Madrid
The hotel sector in Madrid experienced a 10.5% increase in employment, reaching 14,600 workers in April. This figure highlights the role of tourism in the local economy of Madrid. Hotel occupancy also showed significant growth: occupancy by beds reached 66.9% (+3.7 points compared to 2024) and by rooms 78.7% (+0.7 points). /
