The jury of the ideas competition for the remodeling of the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, launched by the City Council of Madrid and the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM), has resolved the contest, with over fifty proposals submitted, awarding the second prize to ‘Sol y sombra’, presented by Carlos Alberto Pita Abad and Xoan Manuel Pérez Lorenzo. Meanwhile, the first and third prizes have been declared void.
In this way, the jury has reviewed the decision made on December 18, 2024, excluding the proposals that had won the first and third place after verifying, following several claims, that they did not comply with the technical requirements of the competition by shifting the sculptural group of Daoiz and Velarde and the Monteleón arch that overlook the square. Additionally, the jury has awarded honorable mentions to the proposals ‘Agua de Mayo’, by Jorge García Anta and Fernando Eiroa Lorenzo, and ‘La luna de Madrid’, by María Milans del Bosch González and Proyectos Múltiplos.
The ‘Sol y sombra’ proposal suggests a Plaza del Dos de Mayo that «is essentially a public garden where, around the monument and the pool that surrounds it, trees play an essential role in organizing the space.» In this way, the authors point out, «the tree organizes, qualifies, and hierarchizes the space, defining different areas given the geometry of its arrangement and the open and continuous plane on which it sits.»
Once the ideas competition process is completed, the Works and Equipment Area will analyze the next steps regarding possible alternatives for carrying out the remodeling of the Plaza del Dos de Mayo. /
