Almeida en la celebración del Día Mundial del Riñón

Celebración del Día Mundial del Riñón

Coinciding with the celebration of World Kidney Day, the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has participated in the renal health promotion day organized by the Spanish Renal Foundation in collaboration with Madrid Salud, where he encouraged the people of Madrid to focus on prevention. «We have a treasure which is our health, that we often don’t know how to take care of,» that’s why he emphasized the importance of «trying to lead a healthy life, eat well, exercise, and avoid stress, because kidney disease doesn’t give warnings.»

The event took place in a tent set up by Madrid Salud in Cibeles Square with the aim of raising awareness and preventing kidney disease. For this purpose, free early detection tests were carried out, consisting of a finger prick to determine creatinine and glucose values which, along with other data such as blood pressure, age, height, or weight, allow estimating the state of renal function of the attendees.

Madrid Salud, through medical and nursing professionals, provided information on healthy habits and risk factors related to renal function that are addressed in the programs developed in the network of municipal community health centers, especially those related to the prevention of type 2 diabetes, healthy eating, and the benefits of physical activity.

In parallel, the Palacio de Cibeles hosted a workshop on Renata my nephrologist, an illustrated book distributed free of charge by the Spanish Renal Foundation in schools and libraries to disseminate information about kidney disease, raise awareness among minors, and promote healthy living and prevention from childhood. Students from the Trilema SaFa School learned about how the kidneys work, as well as the importance of taking care of them with a balanced diet and daily exercise.

World Kidney Day is a global event celebrated worldwide to raise awareness about a disease that already affects 15% of the world’s population. This global campaign has been held since 2006 and each year is dedicated to a specific theme, this year the motto is ‘Are your kidneys ok?’
